The Basic DIY Lip Balm Recipe:

We’ll start with the basic recipe for lip balm, all other variations of lip balms such as different flavors, tints, and essential oils follows this recipe with minute additions. The basic recipe calls for;

  • Emollients; Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Beeswax, Vaseline, Paraffin, Lanolin
  • Base oil: Coconut oil, Olive oil, almond oil, Jojoba oil
  • Essential oil (optional); Lemon, Peppermint, carrot seed, Rose, Cinnamon, Clove, Lavender
  • Lip tint(optional); Scrapings from favorite lipstick or eyeshadow. You can also opt for natural colorants like beetroot powder.
  • Lip balm tubes or containers
  • Double boiler
  • Glass bowl and spatula

Basic Lip Balm Formula:

  • Carrier oil 3 parts
  • Emollient 1 part (slightly more than that)
  • Essential oil not more than 2 to 3 drops
  • Solid Butter 1part (optional)

Directions:

  • In a double boiler melt Solid butter and Emollient.
  • Once completely melted, take off from flame and add the carrier oil. Add lip tint at this stage. Mix well using a spatula or a spoon.
  • Add Essential oil to the lip balm in the end because essential oils are extremely sensitive to heat and sunlight.
  • Before adding essential oil and pouring the lip balm in lip balm tubes, I like to do the spoon test to make sure it is of desired consistency. Take a stainless steel spoon and dip the tip into the lip balm.
  • Leave the spoon on the kitchen counter for a few minutes. Scrape off the lip balm from the spoon when it hardens ad apply it on your skin to check for a smooth application. It should neither be too runny, not too hard.
  • If the lip balm is too hard, add more carrier oil and lightly heat the mixture on a double boiler while stirring constantly.
  • If the mixture is too runny add some more scrapings of emollient or solid butter, again gently heat on the double boiler while stirring constantly.
